8 Signs You Need a Tutor (Part 2)

Tutor - Tutoring

Tutors still seem to be a bit mysterious to some.

Most people think being tutored is something only “rich folk” seek or could even afford. In reality though, a good tutor doesn’t require that much time (or cost that much money), just as long as they’re supplementing a class or course. If they’re teaching or helping you (or your child) excel past what they would learn in a class or course… that’s an entirely different story. Tutors have the ability to make an average student a *STAR*, but that level of tutoring isn’t required to turn a ‘C’ into an ‘A’.

“The purpose of tutoring is to speed up the learning process, make up the skills the child has lost and get them back up to the instructional level so the teacher in the classroom can continue the learning process with the child,” says Edward Gordon, a tutoring consultant for the federal and state governments and author of “Tutor Quest.”

More Signs you Need A Tutor…

5. You get that dreaded CALL!

Most teachers have a knack for knowing when a child needs help. Talk to your (or child’s) teacher, ask them what they think the problem is, and ask them if they think a tutor could help. Getting a tutor won’t solve all problems, but they will solve problems when there are holes in a student’s education. You might even get lucky by talking to the teacher, they might offer time out of their schedule to help out, either on their lunch break or after or before school.

6. You want to learn how to study.

Believe it or not, your grades don’t always have to be suffering in order for you to want to hire a tutor. Most tutors know how to study. Why? Because beyond getting through the subject matter themselves, they’ve also taught others how to get through the subject matter. They know the important points, they know the in’s and out’s, they know the tricks and pitfalls…. They have EXPERIENCE. Sometimes the best way to learn is through apprenticeship, not by sitting in a classroom. This is especially true for standardized tests and special skill tests like the SAT, ACT, and professional certificates. Find a tutor that did very well in a subject, skill, or test, then ask them to teach you everything they know about it.

7. Your (or your child’s) social circle isn’t the healthiest bunch.

At times, all a person needs is a mentor. Someone to show them a different aspect of a subject and open their eyes to something they aren’t accustomed to seeing. Someone to be apart of their life with the ability to teach and guide without the stigma of being a teacher or disciplinary figure. More so, a guide to educational success. A tutor could be an excellent mentor. However you should be very selective when trying to find a tutor who will be a great mentor. Look for a tutor who has excelled in mentoring others. Referrals come in handy when searching for a great mentor. So take the time to ask around and before long you’ll find that special tutor.

8. You (or your child) want to be the *STAR* among a sea of experts.

Every star athlete has an exceptional coach. Learning and education is the same way. Beyond the natural born geniuses’ (if there ever were any), every star had someone in their life directing them and guiding them to excellence. Sometimes it isn’t the ability of the mentor in the subject area; it’s the ability of the mentor to help others find the greatness within themselves. Granted, a special kind of tutor is needed to help someone find and cultivate their abilities, but they’re out there if you look for them.

Tutors are there to help you. Whether you’re trying to get back on track with your studies, gain insight in a particular subject, prepare for an important exam, or surpass your peers, they could add that extra something special to achieve your goals. Stay on the look out for the early signs of educational difficulties. The earlier you could spot problems, the easier it is to take corrective actions to eliminate them. The next time you find yourself or your child struggling in a class or course, remember that a tutor is never too far away to help.
